Aerial Weirdos #17

What's the story here.  Is this an innocent repair operation, or sinister sabotage?  Or is it just a painting of a hitchhiker who's been to the hardware store?  I just don't know.  Nice car though.

This is the third time I have painted this particular wagon, although this is the first time I've painted it airborne.  It's sort of evolved into this strange, pseudo-allegorical "good vs. evil" with a light peppering of "Don't jump to conclusions."  Can't wait to see the fourth one.

Surf Weirdos #4

I have a theory about 1960's vans.  It states that a '60's van looks best when painted the color of a Skittle or an M&M.  Supermarket M&Ms only, please. No special order colors allowed.  Except Electric Green.

The exception to this rule is if you plan to put a Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica. montage on your ride.  In that case, the appropriate base color is Licorice Black.

I would further recommend that the shag carpet interior be done in earth tones, but it's not absolutely required.  And for Pete's sake, bolt down that lava lamp!

Joyrider From Outer Space 3

Lately, more and more people have had their cars stolen by what they describe as "green spaghetti creatures".  These creatures target older vehicles, mostly mild fifties customs.  They are experts in hotwiring, and are able to circumvent nearly any alarm system or anti theft device made today.  Most of the cars are recovered one to three hundred miles away, though one was found in Antarctica, and another may have been spotted on the moon.

Keep an eye out, be aware, and protect yourself and your car from the spaghetti creatures.

Marine Weirdos #1 - The Interloper

"What the heck is THAT??

I've never seen anything like it!  It doesn't look like the other metal beasts I've seen around here.  It seems kind of clunky and... leaky.  I'd better stay out of sight."

Introducing a brand new series that will make you question the very nature of the fabric of space, time, and internal combustion.  Or something similar.

Finders Keepers 7

This is the seventh piece in the FK series, and the first one that doesn't feature a mermaid (if you count the girl in FK6 as a mermaid; opinion is split on that issue).

It's a bit of a strange piece, really.  I just put two drawings from other projects together, added some floating rocks and Voila, painting.  The basic story is pretty much the same as in all the other FK paintings; girl finds unattended truck, girl claims truck as her own, unseen owner is confused at the absurd image of a mermaid or blindfolded angel making off with what was his truck.  Of course, in FK6 the booty was a Cadillac ambulance, and FK9 features an Airstream trailer.

What madness will FK10 reveal? Do tentacles play a role?  Stay tuned.

Tiki God

The Challenge - One on one combat with an infantile stone Tiki God that fights dirty.  He kicks and bites, it's ugly.  No class at all.

The Prize - One hot 1957 Chevrolet pickup in Baby Blue. Well worth the danger, I think. Besides, she's got a big knife, so I think she'll be okay.  And then, on to Tiki God 2, where there's a '39 Dodge to be had.

Burger Break

 It's another day of the same old, and it's enough already.  You need something new and different before you go mad   So climb out of the ocean, swipe yourself a Chevy wagon, and drive to the nearest Utility Burger for the Heart Stopper Value Pack, with Bonus Fries and an Atomic Chocolate Shake.

Because even lobster can suck if it's all you ever eat.

Clearing The Cylinders

It's that miraculous barn find you always hear about. A local drag strip warrior from way back, discovered under a chicken crap encrusted tarp in a shed two blocks away. And it looks like it's all there, too. How awesome is that?

After a few hours of haggling, it's extricated from between the tractor carcass and the rusty bedsprings, and the process of resuscitation begins. Sure, it's a bit smoky, but what do you expect after six seasons of hard racing and fifty years in storage? The fact that the engine is even there to be fired up is nothing short of amazing.

Aerial Weirdos #2

"Okay, so how do I land this thing?"

It cuts through the air like a 2x4 through butter, luggage space is minimal, and it burns fuel faster than a tanker fire.  But imagine the look on peoples' faces when you buzz them in a truck cab!  Plus, it's recycled, which is good for the environment.

Early Evening

We're presenting something a little different this week, a change of pace.  Something without merfolk or disguised tentacle-y mind control beasties.  No, today we present a perfectly ordinary, everyday scene.

This truck's been floating in my reference pile for about eight years.  She almost made it into my Space Hitchhiker painting, but I decided to go another way.  Now she's here, for your viewing pleasure, basking in the early evening sun.

Finders Keepers

This is where the madness begins.  This is Genesis for the whole cars and mermaids thing.

Up to this point the bulk of my work concentrated on scenes of so-called "real life", or my interpretation of it, anyway.  But I was becoming bored with hayfields with tractors and combines and thermoses of sweetened powdered grape drink, or beach scenes with surfers running toward the water.  I needed a change of scenery.

So... mermaid.

But not just any mermaid.  I believe every painting needs a good back story, so I created a thieving, avaricious, possibly schizophrenic mermaid with a taste for vintage trucks and cowboy hats.  Oh, she's also carnivorous, that's important. In fact, someone should tell the approaching surfer dude not to get too close.

Thus was born the delightfully weird Finders Keepers series.

FK is done in watercolor, and measures about 10x17 inches.  The original painting and prints are available in my ebay store.

Twang!

Even a siren has to keep up with the world.  Tastes in music change, and these days an a cappella performance just won't cut it. You need to grab your victim's attention and keep it until it's too late.  That's not easy to do with competition like Aguilera to deal with.  Perhaps some guitar lessons and a homemade amplifier are just what the doctor ordered.  Surfers beware!

The Coffee Break

This is one of those pieces that sort of evolved by itself.

I had already done a version of this car in green, but I was not happy with it.  The whole thing was just blah.  The car was too clean, the background was plain and flat, and the girl was waaaay too goofy. 

So I started over, taking the car out of town and putting it in the middle of nowhere, changing the color and adding some patina.  Now the car needed a new driver, someone less cheerfully creepy and with better fashion sense.  I found a girl who fit the bill waiting in a pile of sketches, minus the wings, which eventually became black.

  So why is she stretching in the middle of nowhere?  Well, she's been driving for 300 or so miles, traveling to point b, wherever that is.  And what might you need after driving 300 miles in a buggy-sprung bathtub, besides a good stretch?  That's right, coffee.  So... thermos.

Who is this winged woman?  Is she an angel or a devil?  Where is she going? Why has she traveled such a great distance, and why didn't she choose a more comfortable mode of transportation?  Like a Cadillac, maybe?  I mean, isn't it cramped in there with those wings?

I cannot answer these questions.  All I know for certain is that she's not drinking decaf.

I got this idea from a photo on deviantart.  The original vehicle was a '57 Chevy sedan that had been radically shortened to fit a short wheelbase SUV frame.  I believe a wagon is a better idea.  It just looks better, and you have room for fishing tackle and beer.

I plan to color this as soon as I can get a decent scan.
